STAKEHOLDERS’ PERCEPTIONS ON PRINCIPALS’ LEADERSHIP STYLE PRACTICES IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN NORTH CENTRAL GEOGRAPHICAL ZONE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study investigated Stakeholders’ Perception onPrincipals’ Leadership StylePractices in Secondary Schools in the North Central Geographical Zone of Nigeria. Nine objectives of the study were set to examine Stakeholders’ Perceptions on Principals’ Democratic leadership Style Practices in Secondary Schools, assesStakeholders’ Perceptions on Principals’ Autocratic Leadership Style Practices in Secondary Schools, examine Stakeholders’ Perceptions on Principals’ Transformational Leadership Style Practices in Secondary Schools, assess the Stakeholders’ Perception on Principals’ Transactional Leadership Style Practices in Secondary Schools and examine the Stakeholders’ Perception on Principals’ Charismatic Leadership Style Practices in Secondary Schools in North Central Geographical Zone, Nigeria. Relevant literatures to this study were reviewed. The study was a descriptive survey. The population of the study covered a total population of 92,089, which comprised 3,167 principals, 61,825 teachers, 1,665 Ministry of Education officials and 25,432 PTA officials. The total sample size was One Thousand Four Hundred and Twenty Six 1,426. The sample size consisted of 345 principals, 382 teachers, 321 MOE officials and 378 PTA Officials. Self-structured questionnaire titled ‘Stakeholders’ Perception of Principals’ Leadership StylePractices in Secondary Schools (SPPLSPSS)” was used to elicit responses from respondents. It was pilot tested in two secondary schools outside the sampled schools with reliability coefficient of 0.72 using split half test. Perceptions of respondents were analysed using frequency counts for research questions and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) for hypotheses to express the results of the findings. The findings show that principals democratic leadership style Practicesused the experience, vital contributions and ideas of subordinates, stakeholders perceived that principals that practiced transformational leadership style demonstrates their concerned for the needs and feelings of the staff through staff welfare. Conclusions were made which includethe dominant leadership style exhibited by the principals in the zone is democratic leadership style where principals focused on experience, contribution and ideas of others to work with. Principals that practiced transactional leadership style encouraged team work within the staff and among the studentswhich has contributed in easy carrying out of assignmentsor duties. The study recommends among othersthat principals who practice democratic leadership style should document all ideas, experiences of subordinates put together as a working policy into hard and soft copies that will enhance continuity of policiesalso principals need to shift to transformative approaches of leadership for effectiveness so as to motivate staff and enhance better performances of studentssecondary schools in North Central Geographical Zone of Nigeria.
